Girona became famous in cycling after Lance Amstrong<\/strong> settled here in the 1990s, and that was just the beginning. About 300 professional cyclists and triathletes live in Girona. David Millar<\/strong> has his house here, former Movistar rider Rory Sutherland<\/strong> has opened a caf\u00e9 here, as has former pro-cyclist Christian Meier<\/strong>. Ryder Hesjedal, Sam Bewley, Luke Durbridge, Dan Martin, Michael Hepburn, Sharon Laws, Lucy Martin, Emilia Fahlin, Georgia Bronzini or Matt Brammeier, all athletes who train and live in Girona.<\/p>\n

Is Girona the best road cycling destination in Europe?<\/strong> It depends on what you are looking for, but it is definitely one of the most popular destinations for cyclists from all over the world.<\/p>\n

First and foremost, these are cycling routes. The roads are in good condition, with minimal traffic (except for the main stretches to the coast in the summer tourist season), drivers are considerate of cyclists, the weather is suitable for cycling all year round, with impressive scenery and various routes in all directions.<\/p>\n

It’s also about the city. Girona is beautiful and vibrant. It offers cyclists what they need: bike rental, service, guides, bike cafes with the best coffee, great restaurants, and excellent accommodation options, from apartments, hotels and bike villas, all tailored to the needs of athletes, from food, storage, and service bicycles or other ancillary services.<\/p>\n

The best part is the preserved medieval city center, it is a pleasure to enjoy walks along its ancient walls, narrow streets, spiral staircases or hidden squares. There is always something going on in the city, whether it is the Easter celebrations, the flower festival in May, the film festival in September, or the celebrations of the city and its patron Saint Narcissus in October.<\/p>\n
